The recent sporadic grenade attacks in the country that has left several families mourning their beloved ones is seriously alarming. Once again the government, the security docket to be specific is letting Kenyans down. A state that has not set the security of its citizens as a prime priority is a failed state.
Sometimes i am always left wondering why our soldiers are busy trying to restore order in our neighboring country Somali while back at home we continue to lose several innocent lives due to grenade attacks by terrorists. It has reached a point that many Kenyans are afraid of visiting certain areas within the country that experience grenade attacks mostly, such as Eastleigh estate in Nairobi and also the coastal city of Mombasa. The most recent attack in the country was three days ago in Eastleigh Nairobi where at least six people lost their lives and several others were seriously injured following three grenade explosions at about 8:30pm.
As Dennis Okari (NTV's investigative reporter) put it sometimes back in a feature story on the state of security in the country, Kenya has become a terrorist's playground. Unarmed security guards with no equipment to detect explosives continue to man social places such as learning institutions, supermarkets and restaurants, places that are often targeted by terrorists. We are sitting on ticking time bombs.
Me thinks Al Shabaab militia group are still plotting to launch serious attacks in the country. Apparently, the group was to attack either Taj Mall in Eastlands Nairobi or Nakumatt Junction supermarket. Luckily enough, four prime suspects were nabbed just before the planned attacks two weeks ago. The police also recovered planted explosives at Nakumatt Junction and some grenades in a car in Eastleigh estate.
Mombasa county has also witnessed a series of terrorist attacks in the recent past. Social places such as bars and restaurants have been mostly targeted by attackers.
If the government won't step up firmly to curb acts of terrorism within our boarders i am afraid the tourism industry will be greatly affected. Just last week the Ministry of Tourism stated that the number of tourists touring the coastal city has drastically reduced. This, without any reasonable doubt can be strongly attributed to the spasmodic terrorist attacks in the city.
Foreign nations will follow suit by offering travel advisories to their citizens not to tour Kenya. In the long run, foreign investors will refrain from setting up businesses that create employment to the youth in the county, crippling the economy at large.
